Similar to the Kovo S28 (produced in the early 50s of the 20th
century), the TOS S28 was popular in the 1950s and 1960s and was the
company's smallest "tool room grade" lathe. It has a center height of
5.5 inches, a distance of 30 inches between centers, weighs 2400
pounds (just over 1 ton), is very bulky, and is mounted on a huge cast
iron bracket with chip trays and central lockers. The headstock and
helical cut transmission assembly is made of a rigid casting bolted to
a 9.875-inch-wide bed with flat surfaces and V-grooves. Like many TOS
machine tools built under the control of the Communist Party of
Czechoslovakia at the time, it is likely that this lathe was built at
more than one site, including Kovo Hodonin and TOS Zebrak.
The 1.375-inch-bore spindle runs on adjustable bronze bearings and is
driven by a powerful 4-horsepower motor flange via a multi-plate
clutch that is mounted to the left of the base at the end of the
headstock and neatly built-in all electrical controls into it. A total
